9th Annual Turkish Festival to Take Place Saturday, November 20 at Hollywood Beach and the Broadwalk
Celebration of Turkish Culture Continues with Photo Exhibition, Art Workshop and Cooking Demonstration at Florida Turkish Center on Nov. 21st
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The Florida Turkish American Association (FTAA) is pleased to present a day of Turkish music, dance, art and culture at the 9th Annual Turkish Festival on Saturday, November 20, 2010 from 10:00AM to 9:00PM at the Hollywood Beach Broadwalk, 100 Johnson Street. The festival is free of charge and open to the general public.
The purpose of the Festival is to promote Turkey, its rich and diverse culture. It is the FTAA’s goal that festival goers will get the opportunity to celebrate, learn about and savor Turkish hospitality, culture and cuisine.
The theme of this year’s festival will be “Istanbul Inspirations,” celebrating Istanbul being selected as the 2010 European Capital of Culture. The European Capital of Culture is a city designated by the European Union for a period of one calendar year during which it is given a chance to showcase its cultural life and cultural development. FTAA will celebrate this prestigious distinction, bringing the fascinating traditions of this rich region to the shores of Hollywood Beach, Florida.
The festival’s highlights will include performances by ATA Turkish Folk Dance Group performing Turkey’s famous traditional and distinctive dances, Hijaz Band, Tamzara Music Ensemble and Belly Dancing. The festival will offer delicious Turkish fare available for purchase, such as doner kebap (spinning roast), grilled kofte (ground meat with spices), borek (cheese and spinach filled pastry), baklava and Turkish coffee, to name a few of the delicacies. There will even be traditional fortune tellers reading fortunes from coffee grinds in the special coffee tent. We will host demonstrations of Turkish arts such as calligraphy and paper marbling (Ebru), with festival goers having the opportunity to purchase these art forms. Free children’s activities include face painting and balloon sculpting, making the festival a family affair.
The celebration of Turkish culture will continue on Nov. 21st, with the FTAA hosting a Turkish Art Workshop and Cooking Demonstration at the Florida Turkish Center, located at 3020 NE 32 Street, Suite 123 in Ft. Lauderdale, from 1 to 4 p.m. Ebru (paper marbling) and calligraphy artists will be showing their skills and inviting attendees to participate. In addition, the ladies of FTAA will present a popular Turkish appetizer for tasting and will share the recipe with guests.
Participants will also enjoy viewing Lütfi Özgünaydın’s 2010 European Capital of Culture Istanbul photo exhibition, which will be on display at the Florida Turkish Center during the month of November. Mr. Özgünaydın is an accomplished award-winning journalist and photographer. His work is exhibited in Turkey as well as abroad. This exhibition will bring Istanbul and its beautiful secrets to you, celebrating the rich heritage of Turkish-Americans and their beloved city “Istanbul.”
